GET WALKING IN ASKEATON, BRUFF, CAPPAMORE, CROOM, PALLASGREEN AND NEWCASTLE WEST

Communities in Motion is an initiative of the County Limerick Local Sports Partnership Steering Group. The aim of the project is to increase the opportunities for people to participate in physical activity within their own community. One of the target groups identified by local people is walking. From national and international research walking is one of the most attractive activities for people.

Already walking leaders have been identified in Cappamore, Croom and Newcastle West. These community people have gone on to undertake Irish Heart Foundation Slí na Sláinte leadership training in the Outdoor Education Centre in Kilfinane. This will enable them to lead out walks in their own communities.

We are inviting anybody interested in learning how to get the best possible health benefits of walking from any of the following areas, i.e. Askeaton, Bruff, Cappamore, Croom, Pallasgreen and Newcastle West to come along to a walking workshop on 4th March in Ard Scoil Mhuire (Post-Primary School) Bruff, from 7.00 p.m. – 9.30 p.m.

The workshops will be enjoyed by anyone interested in any aspect of walking including: The workshop will involve a small amount of enjoyable practical activity – those attending should wear suitable leisure wear.

There will be a follow up session for people from the six communities on Saturday 12th March from 11.00 a.m. – 3.00 p.m. in Ard Scoil Mhuire (Post-Primary School) Bruff. This session will assist communities in organising walking events in their own areas. For further information contact Alyson Casey, Limerick County Development Board (061) 49 63 68 or Mary Carroll, County Limerick VEC 061 44 21 00.

In each of the communities there are plans to develop Slí na Slάinte routes where none currently exists. Ms. Bernadette Cullen, Chairperson of the Steering Group stated that the success of the initiative is dependent on the commitment of local people and the response from the communities involved has been very positive.
