Buntús Start

The Buntús Start programme is now being rolled out to Limerick with 17 childcare service providers from Limerick City and County taking part in the programme at the moment. This is only the start, as more childcare providers will be offered the training, from Limerick County and City Childcare Committees and HSE West, in association with Limerick County and City Sports Partnership.

Buntús Start is a comprehensive physical activity programme for children aged 2-5 years old. It has been designed for use in pre-school settings so that pre-school and playgroup leaders can provide a wide range of learning opportunities for young children to develop their fundamental motor skills, manipulative skills, co-ordination and balancing skills and develop a positive attitude to physical activity.

Buntús Start helps adults working with children to establish positive attitudes to activity and a healthy lifestyle through enjoyable activity with children. It offers a wealth of physical learning opportunities to enable children realise their potential and to become active and independent learners through play.

At the end of the training session, each participating centre will receive a set of resource cards and a Buntús Start bag, containing colourful, child friendly equipment especially developed to suit pre-school children.

Buntús Play and MultiPlay

Buntús – the Official School’s Sports Programme developed and supported by SuperValu and the Irish Sports Council, with the aim of encouraging children to develop a healthy interest in sport from a young age, and to maintain an active lifestyle for longer was recently launched.

Launching Buntús the Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism, Mr John O’Donoghue said “Buntús is an excellent programme, providing every child with an enjoyable introduction to sport. I am delighted to see the relationship between SuperValu and the Irish Sport Council, who are working in partnership to deliver the best possible sports programme for Irish children”.

School-aged children need opportunities to participate in the sport of their choice at an appropriate level, in a safe and enjoyable environment. Buntús provides those opportunities and opens the door to a life long relationship with sport and physical activity.

The programme provides training to all school staff, free child friendly equipment (worth approx €1000) and resource cards to help teachers (and older pupils)use the equipment.

Buntús Play is aimed primarily at 5-9 year olds. The focus is to aid in the development of basic motor and movement skills. This is done using equipment such as balloon balls and other small sized equipment. BuntúsMulti-Sport is aimed at 7-11 year olds. It acts as an introduction to invasion games and net/wall games.

The programme was designed to support the primary Physical Education curriculum and the teachers who deliver it. Buntús is a proven, quality programme, recognised by the Department of Education, which will be delivered through the Local Sports Partnership network.
